Atlanta to Bama

Wall of Peace in Little Five Points

Wall of Peace in Little Five Points

This weekend we started things out in ATL. Our friends in the band Vortex Park hosted us for a gig at the Five Spot in little five points. We got there early enough to hang out and do a little exploring in an area of town with which I was unfamiliar. The place has the energy and excitement that one only finds in a big city. I fell in love with Criminal Records, a really great record store with a huge selection of vinyl. For members of the Corduroy Road, off-stage attire consists of a gray t-shirt and jeans, so we were also kind of fascinated by the people around us who were obviously way more concerned with fashion. I noticed a lot of neon colors and Mohawks.

Saturday we got up early and headed over to do a performance on Wildman Steve Radio. As we left the hotel, I noticed what appeared to be hundred of tortillas on the ground the parking lot next to the hotel.  Upon further investigation I discovered that it was actually a type of Indian flatbread.  The owner’s wife was preparing them and said that they will keep for a year, so she has whipping up a batch to last until summer 2010.  They looked tasty but I would probably have to pass seeing as they were left to dry in an open parking lot sitting on hotel bedspreads.  I don’t even like to touch hotel bedspreads…

So, anyway, Wildman Steve has been a DJ for years but recently made the switch from traditional broadcast to internet broadcast. He had a cozy little studio in the basement of his home and we played a few songs and talked a bit with him on his program. He’s been playing the EP and was very supportive of what we do. We also found out that Wildman is an accomplished washboard player. John recently picked up a washboard himself so Wildman gave a few pointers and cranked out a few beats for us.  I never tire of meeting people who are passionate and excited about music and manage to make it their life.

Just One Drop

Things here at the Corduroy Road have been quite busy.  On April 9th we celebrated the release of our new EP “Just One Drop.” It’s available now at athensmusic.net or cdbaby.com.  Ok, enough shameless self promotion.

down on the corner, out in the street...

Here we are pleasing passersby and infuriating buskers.

We played a pair of shows in Athens in conjunction with the release and both went well.  The first was an unplugged acoustic show outside Wuxtry Records in downtown Athens which was so much fun we’ve decided to make it a regular occurrence when we have a show in Athens.

Things really got going later on at our release party at the Melting Point.  It was a very special night for us, and we were proud to have our friends Delia Low open the show. As usual our Athens crowd was lively and fun and the celebratory atmosphere was heightened by guest appearances during our set.

John, Bill and me. Awesome.

Bill Mallonee joined us for a couple songs on harmonica and vocals, and John Keane sat in on pedal steel guitar for a few numbers as well. Even Ryan Kelly, owner of Mule Train Records joined in on the fun by playing some mandolin with us. At one point we had 8 people on stage. It was a far cry from a couple years ago when the band consisted of just Drew and me.

We’ve played about 45 shows so far this year and this week we’re going to log about 1300 miles on the road. Things are going to pick up even more in the next few months to prepare for the release of our full length record. See ya’ll out there…

Birthdays and Poison Water

A real piece of art.

A real piece of art.

It's like a freaking bonfire.

It's like a freaking bonfire.

We started off last week in Nashville on my birthday and crashed with my sister and brother-in-law. My sister works in a bakery (Sweet & Sassy Bakery in Madison, TN) and she made me a truly excellent guitar shaped guitar. She also put all 28 candles on it, which really put my age in perspective. When you reach a certain age, candles on a cake become less cute and more, well, dangerous. The heat coming off that thing was tremendous. I think I may have lost some eyelashes. We left Tennessee well rested and with full bellies thanks to my sister’s cooking and hospitality. It’s not often that we get comfortable accommodations and good food while on the road. We eat a lot of Subway and burritos, so it was nice to be spoiled for a couple of days.

Next, we headed north and met up with our friends in Packway Handle Band for a pair of shows in Kentucky. We saw lots of old friends and some more family and had more fun than anyone should be allowed.

Our last show of the week was in Whitesburg, KY at the Summit City Lounge. Upon arrival we were advised that we should not drink the water under any circumstances. There had been a petroleum leak that contaminated the county’s water supply and things were so bad that you were not supposed to even wash your hands in tap water. We made due by drinking bottled beverages of varying sorts. I hope the powers that be can get that mess cleaned up so our new friends in Whitesburg can get back to life as normal.

Until next time…

TN to VA to TN

Welcome to the tour blog!!! I wanted a forum to express my thoughts and opinions and keep a record of our travels and adventures. I will be updating this thing regularly, so check back to see what we’re up to.

We’ve been recording lots of videos during live performances lately and several should be up on youtube soon. You can find your favorite TCR songs and also some cool guest performers.

We’re in the process of mixing the new album and hope to have it out sometime this summer. Please stay tuned for further updates on that front.

Congrats to our friend Art Rosenbaum. He just won a Grammy for his compilation called “The Art of Field Recording Vol 1.” Any fan of roots music would do well to pick it up. Volume 2 was also just released and it is just as amazing.

Now for some more personal musings:

We had a blast in Lynchburg, VA on Friday night at The White Hart. It’s a coffee shop/book store. The coffee was great and the food looked tasty as well although I did not eat any myself. We weren’t sure what to expect going into the place but we played to a full and very attentive audience. We talked to some really nice and interesting people and can’t wait to get back there again. If you’re ever in there in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by the White Hart.

We spent the weekend in the mountains of east TN and VA and the natural beauty of the area was spectacular. At one point, the Garmin had us scaling tortuous mountain roads. This was not the most ideal route while traveling in the van, but the views were astonishing. To our right the cliffs dropped deep down into the valley and the sunlight reflected off the water below so that it looked like molten silver.

Speaking of the van, our friends over at Eikon media borrowed our trusty steed recently to shoot part of a new music video for local chanteuse Allison Weiss. So, keep and eye out for that.

And now for a list of…

Records that are currently blowing my mind:

1. “Jackson Brown” aka “Saturate Before Use” by Jackson Browne

2. “Pacific Ocean Blue” by Dennis Wilson

3. “You and Me” by The Walkmen

4. “Buenos Noches From a Lonely Room” by Dwight Yoakam

5. “Tago Mago” by The Can

Adios!
